Nikon has just announced the long awaited replacement for the popular 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens.

The new model incorporates the newer generation VR II vibration reduction system, and promises better performance right through to the edge of the frame when used with full frame FX sensor Nikon DSLR. The new lens also spots the Nano Crystal coating common to the newer generation of Nikkor professional lenses, designed to reduce flare. The new optical design employs no fewer than seven ED elements. A new A/M focusing mode has also been added which gives priority to autofocus when the manual focus ring is engaged.

The new design brings back the look-and-feel of the earlier Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 lenses, with a consistent lens barrel diameter throughout. Dimension wise it is shorter than it’s predecessor by about 6mm, but gaining about 60g in weight. Filter attachment size remains at 77mm.
